Placement on a Currently Not Collectable Status
Taxpayers who are on a fixed, limited income or are undergoing a financial hardship and can successfully show the IRS they cannot collect may qualify for "Currently Not Collectable" status. During the "Currently Not Collectable" status the IRS stops collection attempts and reevaluates the taxpayer's ability to pay the tax debt at the end of the status. The duration of the "Not Collectable" placement varies, but can last until the statute of limitation expires and thereby prevent the IRS from collecting on the tax debt.
